A New Photo of the Death-Star Moon

Just in time to anticipate the success of the Star Wars film "Rogue One", NASA released a new photo of Mimas, the moon of Saturn's that resembles the "Death Star."
Mimas, an icy world about 250 miles in diameter, has a giant crater on it which is 86 miles across. That's a single impact feature that is one third the diameter of the world that it’s on!!  Astronomers speculate that if the chunk that hit Mimas, exploded, and dug out that crater had been a little bit bigger it might well have shattered that moon.  Then Saturn might have had another ring system around it.
The crater has been named “Herschel” after the astronomer (and musician) who discovered Mimas.  In its center is a mountain that towers almost as high as Mount Everest on Earth.  It’s that central peak that helps our mind’s eye see Mimas’ resemblance to the evil superweapon in the Star Wars series.
The photo was taken in October by the Cassini mission, which has been exploring Saturn, its rings, and its moons since July 2004.  Its spectacular images find their way into every course I teach and every tourist tour of the solar system I guide in my public lectures.

Water Found on Largest Asteroid



Astronomers working with the Herschel space observatory have discovered water vapor coming from the largest asteroid in the asteroid belt, the one called Ceres (pronounced like "series"). By strict definition, Ceres is so big and round that it is no longer considered an asteroid, but is now designated dwarf planet number one (having been discovered on Jan. 1, 1801, long before Pluto).

Ceres is about 600 miles across and takes 4.6 years to orbit the Sun (Mars takes 1.9 years, while Jupiter takes 12 years.) The Hubble Space Telescope images of it (see one attached here) show lighter and darker areas. The water vapor is not evenly distributed around Ceres and there is more of it when Ceres is closer to the Sun, so there may be some ice that is sublimating (going from frozen form to vapor) in parts of Ceres.

At Ceres' distance from the Sun, ice on the surface would have all sublimated long ago, so this must be vapor coming from a deeper (frozen) layer, which was a surprise. Some astronomers think there may be enough water ice under the surface of Ceres to make an ocean. This is the first time water vapor has been detected in the asteroid belt, although we have seen it coming from a moon of Jupiter's and a moon of Saturn's. There may be plumes or "geysers" of water vapor coming from parts of Ceres, perhaps like the ones on Saturn's satellite Enceladus.

We will know a lot more about conditions on Ceres next March and April, when the Dawn spacecraft arrives for a rendezvous with Ceres and provides images with unprecedented detail of this intriguing member of our solar system. (Dawn gave us lots of great information about Vesta, the second largest asteroid, before it departed for Ceres in 2012.) Isn't it great how nature continues to surprise and delight us as we explore our cosmic neighborhood?

Black Hole at Center of the Milky Way is Found to be Cooking its Dinner


Astronomers working with the European Herschel Space Observatory have discovered really hot gas in the vicinity of the monster black hole at the center of our Galaxy. Over the years, many lines of evidence have shown us that there is a black hole with enough material to make 4 million Suns at the heart of the Milky Way. The new observations, made using infrared (or heat) rays, show that gases such as water vapor and carbon monoxide have been heated to about 1000 degrees Centigrade within a lightyear of the black hole.

While energy from nearby stars may also be heating this inner gas, the astronomers can't account for so much heat from stars alone. They think that great streamers of gas heading toward the black hole may be colliding and the shock waves from the collisions may be significant contributors to the heating. Some of the streamers of gas will someday be "eaten" by the black hole. In other words, like many a hungry diner, the black hole appears to be "cooking" its dinner in anticipation of eating it.

In fact, other observations have recently shown a cloud of gas weighing as much as several Earths, falling to its doom much closer to the black hole. This cloud may be consumed by the black hole as soon as the end of 2013. When such clouds actually spiral inward to their doom, they heat up a lot at the end. The last thing we observe from them before they fall into the black hole (and are no longer visible) is a "burp" of x-rays. Several x-ray telescopes in space are prepared to record such burps when they happen.

If you are cooking a barbecue this Memorial Day Weekend (a holiday in the U.S.), you can enjoy the idea that some serious cooking may also be going on at the center of our Galaxy. The center region is 26,000 lightyears away from us, so none of this poses the least danger to planet Earth and its cooks.

(By the way, to see one of the lines of evidence for the existence of the monster black hole, we recommend a great new movie made from observations by astronomer Andrea Ghez' group at UCLA.
